Dental X-rays

Dental X-rays enable dentists to identify oral health issues, such as cavities and gum disease, early on, allowing for timely treatment. There are two main types of dental X-rays: intraoral (inside the mouth) and extraoral (outside the mouth). These X-rays are essential for maintaining optimal oral health.

Overview

What are dental X-rays?

Dental X-rays (radiographs) are internal images of teeth and jaws. Dentists use them to examine structures not visible during routine checkups, including the jawbone, nerves, sinuses, and tooth roots.

How do dental X-rays work?

Dental X-rays use electromagnetic radiation to create mouth images. The radiation beam passes through soft tissues, producing images of teeth and bones. X-rays can be traditional (film-based) or digital (using a digital sensor and computer). Digital X-rays use 80% to 90% less radiation than traditional ones.

What do dental X-rays detect?

Dental X-rays reveal:

  • Cavities, especially small areas of decay between teeth

  • Decay beneath existing fillings

  • Jawbone loss

  • Infection sites

  • Unerupted or impacted tooth positions

  • Abscessed teeth

  • Tumors, including cysts and some malignancies

Dentists also use X-rays to assess eligibility for treatments like dental implants, braces, or dentures, and to monitor healing after procedures such as dental bone grafts and root canal therapy.
